Improved Safety Through Regulation Compliance

We take safety very seriously here at Celeste, which is why we take government regulations seriously as well. The goal is to preserve the safety of our employees, the environment, and the end users of our products. Being a global company, we have a variety of regulations we need to comply with. Keep reading to find out  more about the regulations we follow and why.

USA Compliance: FDA and EPA

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is federal agency of the US Department of Health and Human Services. They have a wide variety of regulations, but the ones that concern Celeste center around hand soaps and hand sanitizers. The FDA has guidelines for what ingredients can be included in hand care products and how they must be labeled; all to protect the end user from potential harm.

Our team of chemists at Celeste have worked, with specialists well versed in the policies set by the FDA, to ensure that all our hand care products comply with the regulations and guidelines. Not only do the regulations ensure we are using safe ingredients, but they require Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) and Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) to be followed. In recent times, this has meant removing Triclosan from all our antibacterial soap formulations; as well as ensuring our products are safely manufactured.

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is the primary agency for protecting the environment from air and water pollution as well as protecting US citizens from the health hazards of pollution. Like the FDA, the EPA has guidelines and regulations that affect what ingredients we can use in our products. They also regulate disinfectants sold in the USA. In order to get a product registered as a disinfectant, the EPA requires specific testing to be done to confirm that the product is truly a disinfectant and kills microorganisms as advertised.

In order for Celeste to comply with the EPA, we have all our disinfectant products registered through them. Working with specialists who are familiar with the EPA regulations, our chemists design and formulate our disinfectant products, then the products are sent to qualified 3rd party laboratories to be put through rigorous testing to confirm that they are in fact able to kill microorganisms and are safe for the end user.

By following the regulations and guidelines set down by the FDA and EPA, we can ensure that our products are effective and safe to use.

Canadian Compliance: Health Canada

Health Canada is an organization similar to the EPA in the USA. They regulate the sale of disinfectants and hand sanitizers throughout Canada. We rely on a team of specialists familiar with the regulations set down by Health Canada to ensure we comply with them. All in the interest of protecting the end users of our products.

European Union Compliance: REACH and BPR

REACH is a set of regulations that allows for better protection of human health and the environment through earlier and better identification of the intrinsic properties of chemical substances. This is done through a series of processes under REACH: Registration, Evaluation, Authorization, and Restriction of Chemicals. REACH ensures that the products we manufacture are safe for end users.

The BPR, or Biocidal Products Regulation, focuses on biocidal products sold into the European Union (EU) (e.g. disinfectants, antibacterial hand soap). This regulation is intended to ensure that the biocidal products on the market are safe for human use and the environment.

At Celeste, we work with specialists located in the European Union who are well versed in the policies associated with REACH and BRP. Together with our chemists, they ensure that all our products sold into the EU are fully compliant and safe to use.

Global Compliance: GHS

The Globally Harmonized System for Hazard Communication (GHS) was adopted by the United Nations back in 2003. It includes guidelines for the classification of health, physical, and environmental hazards as well as the information that needs to be included on labels and safety data sheets (SDS) for hazardous chemicals.

Here at Celeste, we carefully follow the guidelines from the GHS to develop our labels and SDS. We take safety very seriously and want to ensure everyone can use our products without issue. By complying with GHS, we ensure that our labels and SDS are easily understandable and all important safety information is conveyed.
